A breif overview of the meeting:

President Fred Wergeles of Fred Wergeles & Associates gave an excellent presentation about the world of competitive intelligence.  He suggested this line of work would be great for people who had "inquisitive minds and could embrace ambiguity," and gave the advice to start networking as much as possible, as early as you can.  The world of competitive intelligence is basically doing extensive research for companies in vairous fields to try to get a leg up on their competition.  We hope that you really enjoyed listening to all that he had to share with us.

Meeting:  CIDRIS

Date and Time:  Monday, October 22nd at 5:00 PM

Location:  BUSN 215

Hey Everyone!

Thank you to everyone who attended tonight's meeting!

We had Paulo Goes the director and founder of CIDRIS come and speak with us.  CIDRIS is massive data extraction, data validation, massive data storage and analytics.  While his job includes teaching and service, a large majority of his time is spent researching.  He especially spends a lot of time researching and analyzing online auctions (like Ebay).  He is very fascinated with consumer behavior in this type of setting.

Marketing and technology really go hand in hand.  He encouraged everyone to take a closer look at the advantages of having a tech background in the field of marketing because knowing consumer behaviors and being able to analyze data is very important. He also informed us that even though there is a perception that people within the MIS major don't get jobs due to outsourcing, it is really not the case, so don't shy away from the idea.

If you are interested in this and want to learn more about data analytics, Professor Goes is teaching OPIM 298 next semester about data mining.

Meeting:  Ernest Shackleton Leadership Event

Date and Time:  Tuesday, November 6th at 6:00 PM

Location:  BUSN 227

Hey Everyone!

I know that tonight's meeting was held on a different day and time but we thank the few of you that were able to make it.

Pete Peterson, the head of the Program for Sales Excellence, gave a terrific presentation about leadership through the Ernest Shackleton example.  He used info packets, a PowerPoint that included pictures and video clips combined with an interactive discussion, to demonstrate how Shackleton was an amazing leader.  Shackleton and his crew were stranded in Antarctica for 2 years and through his skills and ability to be an effective leader, they all extraordinarily survived.  This was truly an inspiring story and a great opportunity to learn how to be a great leader.  We all can become leaders even if we aren't necessarily born into that role because, "You wait.  Everyone has an Antarctic" - Thomas Pynchon, V.
